20 Master Angler speed question
I have a 78 master angler 20 w/ a 200hp mercury1988). I only get about 43 mph wot. and the boat runs very flat in the water. I have tried different props to get lift but no luck. I was thinking maybe the hull had develpoped a slight hook in it may be due to poor support of the transom. are the bottoms absolutl flat .Will a straight edge give me my answer??? The motor has good compression and is ok

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
@ what RPM? It's all relative. The MA's seem to run pretty flat due to the reverse sheer of the bow. Maybe that's what you are noticing. OTOH, you should be able to go much faster than 43 with 200 ponies.

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
I started out messing around with props @ 43/44mph on a MA with a 1981 Merc v225 w/wh-22 carbs. I tried tons of different props (ignoring good advice from everyone who's done this before) and finally broke 50mph this weekend using a Mirage 19 plus.
1. Weight and Wind Resistance make a huge difference. Minimize both. 2. Raising the motor also will give you extra speed especially if the engine is low. Try raising the engine a few holes or get a jackplate. |

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
I get about 5700 with a mirage 17 . 43-44 mph. motor is in the 3rd hole up. trim helps a little bit but it still flat. I also have bottom paint which I know hurts the speed alittle, what rpms are you turning with a 19 mirage? how high is the motor?

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
I have bottom paint, a 8hp four stroke kicker on the back, and the huge console. I can see 45+ with three big guys on the boat with the aluminum Yamaha 19 prop.
I hit 50.8 on my garmin GPS @ 5800rpm in light wind chop with the mirage plus 19 driving solo. I'll take a picture of the cavitation plate and the hull with the motor down. All the holes on the mirage plus are plugged. I could turn the mirage 17 plus 6100rpm. |

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
I also have removed the high speed spark advance module on my merc. That might be the difference. I believe that the high speed spark advance retards the timing above 5600rpm.

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
ACF - See if you can find a place that will let you try out some props. Try a 19 Highfive, Tempest Plus, Laser II, or an Enertia (if you can find one). Report back. The 17 Highfive I tried had more lift than the mirage plus and was a lot smoother. The diameter was a lot smaller and the blades were much thinner too.

Re: 20 Master Angler speed question
I have a 76'MA w/1992 200 Yamaha and I can top out at about 52mph. She screams, pops right out of the water and is good at all rpms. Not a single problem I can think of aside from needing a new transom somewhere down the line.
