Bracket question for a 20SF
Hey Guys,
I have a 1970 20SF project boat that I may pick up and I was looking for some opinions on putting a bracket on this boat. I will be going with a new carb'd 200 Yam 2 stroke HDPI. Boat will be used for extensive fishing(drifting and trolling), with the occasional run to West-end for the week-ends. I like the idea of the extra room the bracket gives you in the stern. Thanks for your output guys, looking forward to being a part of this site. Thanks Steve |

Still the braket on that boat would be a mistake. It' to short and will wield a boat that float's ass end heavy. Scupper's under water. |

Re: Bracket question for a 20SF
Welcome Steve to CSC
Good Luck with your refurbishing. I agree with Warthog that a bracket would not suit a 20' unless it was a flotation type. BTW: I would also think twice about making a Bahamas trip in a 20'. I have made several and those seas can get pretty nasty in the Gulfstream coming off the Bahama Bank. Those summer thunder boomers can also spring up quickly and kick your azz Make sure you consider the extra gear, supplies, coolers, people etc. that is required to make a crossing. I don't know what your fuel capacity will be nor your 200hp fuel burn estimate in a head sea but West End is approx 58nm from West Palm Beach. The closest trip would be to Bimini. If you left out of Miami Harbor it would be approx 42nm.

Re: Bracket question for a 20SF
Why wouldn't a bracket with floatation work on a 20?

Re: Bracket question for a 20SF
Cantilevered weight and the length & width of the boat is why.
There is recent in depth thread here on the subject. http://www.classicmako.com/forum/top...TOPIC_ID=11779 There is a pix of a Green 20ftr w/ bracket on here somewhere that was very nicely redone, but the ass end sit's really low in the water. |

Re: Bracket question for a 20SF
I will let ya'll know one day (if it ever gets finished). I am having the transom enclosed and a bracket put on a 20. I have followed discussions on this board and the link posted from the Mako site. It seems to me that the trouble is coming from boats that are being overloaded. Most posts are talking about a large (200Hp)four stroke or twin four strokes being mounted on the back. I have a 140 hp four stroke that will be installed, granted it will not be a rocket ship, but I think the bracket will help. The 140 will work mounted on the transom, the flotation bracket should only work to offset the cantilever effect. If an engine or engines are too heavy on the transom then I would agree that putting them on a bracket will not help.
Hopefully, I will be able to provide some useful info on this set up in the near future. BA |

Hey Capt. Chuck, and thanks for the welcome. Yeah I know about those summer Thunder boomers, got caught out in one today! Fun
I'll have to keep an eye out for your boat, your very close. Boat looks great too BTW. And If I go with a bracket it will definately be a floatation type. Thanks for everyones input. It is greatly appreciated. Steve |

Re: Bracket question for a 20SF
I plan on adding a bracket to my 20sf... at least thats the plan of two days ago. I will make it work. Things to keep in mind are:
1. large flotation chamber 2. engine weight 3. weight distribution on boat (fuel tank, batteries, etc) 4. trim tabs This is from Don Hermco's site. They are pics of his personal boat: care to chime in Donald? strick
