OK I have searched many a post on the "in floor scuppers" on the 20' CC. My question is: Has anyone ever tried switching the 1969 and 1970 scuppers that drain through the deck and then out the transom to the 1971 and later that version that drain through the deck and out the bottom? I am re-doing the transom on a 1970 and the scuppers drain pretty much below the waterline. Some of the other posts on the 1970 boats mention as soon as you get in put the plugs in or else-water on deck. I wonder is this the same on the scuppers that drain out the bottom?? (1971 and later) I am not planning on rasing the deck. Just wondering if there is any benefit at all to re-routing the thru hulls to the bottom. Curently the thru hulls and the deck drains are connected via a (original) rubber hose. THANKS . THE HERMIT

The problem with the water-on-deck in the 20' isn't related to where the scuppers are located, it's due to the deck being too low.
I had through-the-floor scuppers in my 20' and through the transom scuppers in my 18'. Both boats had wet feet syndrome prior to raising the floor. Either boat was fine just sitting in the slip by itself but as soon as humans were introduced into the equation, the water came right on in. One thing you can try with those scuppers out the transom is the ping-pong ball type covers. Several companies make them (Rabud, etc) and while not perfect, they do help some. Having had both styles of drain (scuppers), I would never change from the out-the-transom style in favor of those through the floor straight-down scuppers. |

Ikan,
Did you ever consider eliminating the deck drain and building a scupper to drain through the area of the jump seats and out the transom. By my estimation this may rasie the scupper outlet at the transom by as much as 2" but you would definately be giving up the good bailing of the deckdrains while on the mooring. I think others have tried this as well (Goerge's 20' in the Gallery).

If you are having water intrusion issues and yet have no plans to raise the deck, I would suggest Rabud ball scuppers in addition to plugs for the drains in the cockpit. I may very well misunderstand what your are proposing but I would think that if the floor is at sea level, physics dictates that you are going to have water issues regardless of how high above water the outlets (scuppers) are. Any spray/rain that gets in will still have to get out and I think the outlet will need to be the lowest part of the equation or the water will merely back up inside the tube. My scuppers as they are now (notice how the floor/deck in the first photo actually slopes slightly down to the center, this effectively chanels any water/spray right into those drains) : ![]() ![]() |

So basically it dosnt matter the setup if the original floor is left alone. OK so you keep the bronze thru hull and mount the ping pong ball scupps over the top somehow?

I have those thru the bottom type on my 78 20' MA and I am considering switching to the thru the transom type. At least you can try those ping pong ball type covers on those.
