KEEPING STUFF DRY??

Ok it has happened again, & I am going to beat this thing.

Question: How do you keep things dry in this hatch???



This weekend I pulled out my artificial lures that I keep in this hatch inside a rubber coated dry bag and wouldn’t you know it some how water still got into the dry bag and now I got 20 something lures that I had to wash off, dry off ,change most of the hooks on before I again put them back in that same environment that caused them to get wet in the first place. This happens to me with something in there at least once a year and really gets my goat. Now I am considering putting them in a dry plastic box and then back into the hatch.
If the water wouldn’t collect in the hatch but drained out that would solve the problem.
Has anyone drilled out a 1” hole in that little recessed water collection part on the right of this hatch to allowed water to drain into the bilge instead of collecting in the hatch area? As we all know the channels for water around that hatch helps some but don’t really keep water from getting in there. So we need either a drain to get it out or some better way to prevent water from getting in there.

Any suggestions??????

That happened to me a few weeks ago in the other hatch just below the one on the forward deck. Opened up the hatch and it was 1/2 full of water. My emergency kit(same as yours in the pic) was soaked. Flares were all ruined. Really pissed me off cuz not I have to go and buy a new e-kit. My storage hatch (the one below the one in your pic) has a 1" drain plug in the bottom that drain's to the bilge. I pulled the plug so it wont happen again. May as well leave it out all the time if you think about it the only way to get water out of there is to vaccume it out or let it drain to the bilge. I dont know why my little side lip drains are not working. I'll take a look at the deck hatch you have pictured sometime today. I usually keep stuff in that hatch that I dont care if it gets wet.

For me I reverse it, in the one you keep dry I keep stuff that I don’t care as much if it gets wet or not. I will anchor up in 150’ of water so I keep approx 400’ of rope in there, a cast net, anchor, cutting board, and other stuff.



Taco carries some weather stripping but I have never had luck with this stuff around the water channel in the hatch.

How do the top tier boat manuf do it? I will take a look at my buddys SeaVee, but they are set up with fish holds with drains into the bilge. If i recall correctly they have large lips and large channels througout the floor and is a different layout anyhow.

I used some inexpensive foam stick on strip from Home Depot that helped my aft hatches more with rattling. I am sure it helps seal but mine are not as exposed.

If you can slow it down, some type of rubber mat in the bottom/sides to elavate may help water from wicking into the dry bags.

My rear hatches tend to pool up before draining into the bilge. I leave a large sponges in each box to ring out the trapped water.

There may not be any useful info in this post(or any other post ), but i keep trying ....

Pelican cases do a great job of keeping stuff dry, you might want to check them out.

That hatch on my boat drains out the bottom of the boat. There is a little collection area with a drain in it.

That’s the spot I am thinking about drilling a hole in and running a line into the bilge and keeping it dry instead of it catching water. In fact I am thinking of glassing over that hole where it drains to the outside and just have a hole in that recessed area and letting it drain into the bilge.

I have a similar hatch on my 20' and although it does have a drain to the bilge in the bottom, things still get wet in there. I've taken to using those cheap Tupperware type containers you get at Walmart for lures or anything else kept in that compartment that needs to remain dry.

The Taco weather stripping idea certainly sounds interesting.

While I own a lot of Pelican cases in various sizes, I don't think they are the right tool for this application.

Mine fills with water too, I bought some foam weather stripping but haven't put it on since we went into the dry season. It is a pain though, sometimes during the summer I would forget to look and ended up towing a bunch of water around all day. [img]/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]
