86 Tsunami Transom Rebuild
I'm back!!! I just have to say I would much rather have Hermco do the full transom enclosure with bracketed twins but my x-mas money went to other things that my wife thought were more important(I'm new to this marriage thing). So now i'm going to do the transom rebuild myself and replumb the livewell. I'm going to use 3/4" and then another 1' 1088 board, then add a little more epoxy then what was originally on there. Originally it had 2 3/4" plywood sheets with a lot of grey filler which had some little holes that were holding water. If anybody has any tips or suggestions that would be great. I'll also update with new pictures in the near future.

Re: 86 Tsunami Transom Rebuild
Spent pretty much the whole day on the computer and phone talking to people, sounds like I'm doing this backwards. From what I understand I should have taken the inner skin off then put in the core and glass in and work out the right angles which supports the weight and the motion of the motor on the transom. Looking at the pictures, the wood never went down to the bottom and the only thing holding the transom vertical was foam and the grey filler. The foam and grey filler were on all three sides and then you had the fiberglass and core. Will I be okay putting in the core then shot foam and epxoy filler on sides and bottom then glassing the outer skin? or should I cut the angled sides and then angle the core and glass in? Or do some more cutting? Every hole I drill on this boat their is foam. With that said their are no soft spots and the only thing wrong is the transom and some moist foam.

Re: 86 Tsunami Transom Rebuild
Got some more work done today, the second picture is what my transom use to look like(wood, filler, fiberglass). I also found some 1" cracks on the top of the outer skin where the angle meets the rest of the boat. For mounting the plywood I'm going to glass a traingle foam corner on the three sides after I dig out some of the old foam so that I can attach it easily to the rest of the transom. Then I'll shape the wood accordingly and glass the rest of it in. I'm also going to put 2 knees in the splashwell that will hopefully help with some support. Any other ideas?

Re: 86 Tsunami Transom Rebuild
These pictures were takin tonight after I put on a layer of glass. Before hand I took out all of the grey filler/putty and I also took about 4 inches inward of foam out that was water logged. Next I will drill a couple of holes and pour foam and allow it to fill in and come out of the holes. Then I will put another layer of glass on the inner skin.

Re: 86 Tsunami Transom Rebuild
Capt_Mac,
Did I meet you in Marathon this past summer during mini-season? I spoke with another guy that had the 23' Tsunami like mine and someone on this forum said that you might be that guy. Let me know if you are. I would like to see how your boat's doing. |
