opinions...2001 evinrude 150

Hey guys,

I just went and looked at a 2001 evinrude 150. The asking price is $4500. It is being sold from the dealer that origionally sold it. It has 350 hours, and the highest rpm's it has seen is 5120. The computers did not report anythign wrong with it, or any problems in the past.

I was able to get the price down to $4100 and i put a small deposit on it. It also will come with a 30 day warranty.

I'm not concerned with any powerhaed issues that the earlier fichts are known for. My dad has 2 2000 150's, so i know that these engines are good if you have a good one.
My main question is, Is there anything else I should be concerned about?
I believe that the price is good based upon other engines i've seen for sale, and I also checked nada guides.

The engine will go on the back of my 20'. Does anybody have a similar set up? I'm thinkin she'll cruise at 32mph and top out at 45.

Any feedback would be great.

I had a 1999 150 ficht. Top speed was a hair over 40mph on my 20 MA. My advice is to beat the living piss out of that motor during the first 30 days and get the bugs worked out. That motor needs to be propped to hit 6000rpm . . . 5100 is very very low. Blown the carbon out . . . it probably needs it. http://www.boatsetup.com/Decarb_FICHT.html

Also I think from some good sources on FS you should run the DFI oil from Rude the XD50. Part of the problems on early DI motors was the oil was not as advanced as the motors.

There is no doubt that i'll run it at wot for a lil while to get that carbon out...hopefully the previous owner used carbon guard.

I wouldn't use any other oil except the oil from rude....its not worth using a cheaper oil that is not as good for your engine. Then your just asking for problems.

You should do a good decarb on it, since you are from here I will give a number for my best friend and one of the worlds top Rude experts. There are a variety of decarbonizing chemicals out there, most of them pretty good, although I'm slightly partial to Quicksilver/Mercury PowerTune

One trick I learned was to spray the stuff into the intake while running WOT in gear. Nothing works better except an engine tear-down.
