30+ year old transoms provide fantastic mulch don't they?

yes they do make good mulch yes i reused the skin i just got it back yesterday solid as a rock

Hermco - When you leave the 3" border of old transom . . . do you dig out the old wood around the edges or just leave it be?

Seems like if the perimeter wood is dry and in marginal shape it'd be "ok" to leave it be . . . correct? or should you just dig out everything and fit a bunch of pieces in like a jig saw puzzle?

For best results I would get it all out and if you cut the top cap you can slide the new core in as one piece and not have to "jigsaw" puzzle it it.

Removing the core from the outside saves you from cutting the cap or liner.

I don't mean to rain on your parade but you are going to have a hell of a time glassing the seam on that transom. I would have left about 3" of existing transom from the edges to give yourself something to feather grind and glass to.
