Default twin 140 zukes on a 23cc?

Has anyone done this recently? What kind of performance numbers do you get. I was originally thinking 250 or 300 yamaha or suzuki but I am kinda drawn to the 2 engine reliability for offshore. my big concern is fuel burn. being a charter/commercial guy I need to really minimize my fuel costs since I am putting all this money into restoring Billybobs old '73.

I'd like to see any numbers too.....I'm down to two choices for my bracketed Tsunami....twin zuke 140s or twin 175 optis (performance wise this one wins.... The 175 Optis weigh in at 431lbs and the zukes 420lbs. The zuke is less $$$ and is a 4 stroke. The Optis have power to spare and smartcraft. The 115hp optis could be an option, but I think that could be a little under powered....but they only weigh 370lbs, are cheaper and have smartcraft too.

Right now I have twin Yamaha 200 HP OX66's sitting on my 23'. I believe that they weight over 450 pounds each. They only have about 270 hours on them and my plan is to drive them for as long as I can.

So far they have been very reliable. My only issue is that they like the gas. In the 30 to 40 mile per hour cruise range, I probably average around 1.7 miles per gallon.

After they go, I see the following options

1. Go with Yamaha HPDi's
Pro's
- I already have Yamaha controls.
- Better gas mileage (I would hope to average at least 2 miles per gallon with the HPDI's)than I get today
- Not super expensive
- I like Yamaha's
- I like 2 stroke hole shot performance

Con's
- They are a little heavier than what I have today.
- I have read that the HPDI's are a generation behind the E Tec's (and possibly even Merc's)

2. Go with E Tech's

Pro's
- Arguably, the best 2 stroke motor on the market

Con's
- The most expensive option (up front anyway)
- Motor weight

3. Go with Zuke's (either twin 115's or 140's)

Pro's
- Cost
- Fuel efficency

Con's
- Speed?????
- I don't know 4 strokes???

I would be interested to hear Briguy's opinion on this as he has twin 115 HP Zukes and seems to be quite high on them.

Merc typically underates on the power....so a 115 opti might come close enough to a 140 zuke. The 175 optis is the biggest displacement for the block (135, 150 and 175) like the 140 is in the zuke line.

ETECs would be great but expensive....but probably in line with the 175 optis costwise.

billybob; a little update on the progress: I have the transom out and ready to go back in. After removing everything but the outter skin of the transom, I found that a lot of the original fiberglass in the center of the transom had not bonded so there were some massive airpockets in the glass that had to be ground out. there were also a few cracks where the transom meets the bottom that had progress all the way through. these unforseen items set me back a few days so on new years eve my dad and I tried to get the new core into the transom. the bead of thickened epoxy around the bottom had started to set up before we could get it in, so the day ended with lots of four letter words and aggravation, followed by a lot of grinding 2 days later(I was in no shape to grind anything the next day).
Now that I have gotten all the hardened excess epoxy out, and I got the deer hunting bug out of my system, we are going to try it again tomorrow with an extra person and some added wisdom. we are still on dial-up here so I cant really post any photos, but I will as soon as I get back home to Mass.

do a search for briguy . . . he's got a set of suzuki 115's (almost the same motor as the 140). Performance will be very close to what he posted. You'll get better economy and pay less for maintenance with one larger motor and a kicker for backup (and SLOW trolling for stripers). If you are trolling for tuna then twins will be better.

To answer this thread I run 22" ss props on my twin 115 Suzuki 4 strokes and I get 28mph and 10.5gph at 4k rpm's for about 2.7MPG and that is with a full tank and 3 people. Max speed 38kts at 6300 rpm's. I may go to 24" props to drop the rpm's down to 5900 or so.

Don’t know your budget but I purchased a pair of used Yamaha 130’s from a dealer and rebuilt them. I have about $3,000 invested, $500 to purchase them and $2500 in parts to rebuild them. Performance numbers are not as good as a 4-stroke, but not bad.

4000 rpm 24knots/ 28mph 2.0 mph
4500 rpm 27knots/ 33mph 2.29mph
5000rpm 34knots/ 40mph 2.13mph
w.o.t. 42knots/43mph 1.4mph

Motor weight 368 lbs each.

Nice boat, what a deal on the motors. I have been looking for a used motor for my boat but have not found anything.
