why we should not let our boats sit
well it has been 9 months since i used (actually was in water). well went out the other day and gave her a washing, greasing killed the hornets whom had mad a home on board. well i got a laundry list of things that are wrong.
1 shift shaft bushings have frozen up in the motor(80ish 175 merc). how hard are these to replace? cost i see for the parts are cheap. 2 trim tilt seems to work on occasion sometimes the motor just clicks sometimes she works. checked for loose wires and a dirty connections all are good now. also lost my up trim button in this time frame. 3 the motor will not turn left or right (old school hynautic) just sounds like the check valves in the helm are bypassing the pressure any hints or tips are appricated. just want to get the boat running againg so after i get married me and my wife can use it.

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
I've experienced 2 of the 3 symptoms and resolved them as follows:
1. I don't know but I'm sure someone else maybe Bigshrimpin does. 2. Trim reservoir, may be low on fluid - check to see if it takes ATF or 10-30W or some other hydraulic fluid and top it off accordingly. Low battery can also cause that problem. 3. My Hynautic steering requires air pressure. If yours does (would likely have a pressure gauge on top of canister that runs to cylinder) there will be a valve on that canister & you'll want to put 30 or 40 psi in w/bike pump whatever (maybe more) depending on model. Start with 20 or 30 psi. That may be enough to make it work confirming this thought. Good luck. And thanks for the advice. I concur, we shouldn't let our boats sit.

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
thanks mcgillicuddy for the information.
1 hey big how hard are thoses bushing to change? 2 trim reservior is full i went out side and checked it before esponding to the post. 3 my hynatuic is probably the same as yours since i have the canaster thing under my helm. i only had 15 psi in it i will bring my compresser home and bump it up to 25 and se what happens from there.

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
I have a Sea-Nautic helm manual with "steering assist" , which I think you both are referring to. I will check my manual and see what it recommends for max pressure, but I seem to remember 9-12 lb.s. Don't go blowling any seals until you find out the appropriate pressures.

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
Quote:
A penguin is driving across the dessert and his car starts belching blue smoke. He pulls into a mechanic's shop in the next town and tells the mechanic the problem. Mechanic says he will get to it in about a half hour. Penguin sees an ice cream shop across the street, and being a penguin, wants something cold to eat. Comes back in half an hour, but because penguins have flippers instead of hands, he can't use a napkin and he's a mess. Penguin asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. Mechanic turns around and says to the penguin "Looks like you blew a seal". Penguin says "Oh. No, that's just ice cream" Dave

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
Here's a link to the Hynautic intructions, like Lew said, make sure to identify your model so you don't over do it and if you use a compressor make sure to limit the air pressure:
http://boaterstore.com/hynautics/hynautic1.html Regarding the power trim and tilt, if it isn't the low fluid, bad contacts or weak battery, the trim solenoid may be be cooked or have crusty terminal, check volts and ohms there. Good luck. let us know what you find

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
on the solinoid you can jump across the big terminals to check it it is the solinoid - stick with Merc's though my NAPA -Sierra went out again in a year

Re: why we should not let our boats sit
well got the steering to turn left and right. the preesure gauge on top of the hydraulic tank has failed. it reads 20psi when there is none in it . put the pressure up to 25( found label on back side of can) and it works.
now on to the trim and tilt,i have a weak battery so i switched the one out of my other truck just to test it,now it goes up and down no problem. but i have lost my trim up button on f/r shifter. i can still raise the motor from the trailer button on the dash. will start ohming wires and switches to se what has failed. thanks for all the help
