Default removing cap

I plan on removing the cap on my 23 inboard to replace the core and while im in there think I should rip out the rotten wood from my transom. When I remove the cap what precautions should I take in order for it not to get deformed and fit properly when I put it back on? Any past forums that go through a detailed transom repair? I would I appreciate any and all advice.
