Expired Flares
Hey gang, was just wondering if it's illegal to carry expired flares on your vessel even if you
have the appropriate number of unexpired ones(which we all do right?) I know people always say "keep your old ones as backup", but why not keep an extra UNEXPIRED set on board? I couldn't find anything in my CT Boater's Guide stating it's illegal so maybe I answered my own question. I just swear I read something at one time saying not to have expired ones on board. Whatta y'all thinkin' on this?

More the merrier... Just have the legit ones in the right spot and then another bag for old ones. They still work and if you ever need them god forbid you had just thrown them away. Come to think about it I've never actually thrown any away (bonfires!).

Yeah, they would likely start a good old fashion Bonfire! Keep'em. Even if half have reached the point of non-igniton, the other half may end up still making the difference. Store them cool and dry and they will likely last a fair amount of time with little loss.

I heard somewhere that it is illegal to keep expired flares on the boat. The reason being if they were needed, a person who does not know the difference might grab the wrong ones. The solution to this is to mark one set (expired) with the word TRAINING on them. This way they can not get mixed up but are still available if needed
