Help w/ Blackmax PT&T

Hello all,

Have a mid to late '80s (I think) V6 Blackmax 150.

Motor is stuck in the full up position, won't go down.

When I hit the down button nothing happens, no clicking sound, no trim motor sound... nothing.

This is the second time this has happened. First time couple weeks ago, I pushed powerhead down with my foot while pushing the down button. got the motor to start to move a lil then trim motor finally kicked in.

Happened again this week, had to resort to the manual release to drop motor. once underway the trim (up & down) functioned normal. Tied boat up for the night, next day same thing happened again.

Is it bad to use the manual release while boat is in the water?

Any ideas what the problem could be?

The salt water follows the leads down thru the TNT motah and corrodes it from the inside out. Has the motah been sounding slower lately? Seal the wires with silicone to help prevent this. You can use the manual release. Carry a floor jack and blocks until you address this.

My Brother shelled 2600 clams for this job. GFS, under 350 total.

Easy fix...
Blue wire up (blue sky up)
Green wire down (Green grass down)
No switch on motor!
Take jumper wire at the engine and disconnect the
blue, green and red wires.
Jumper from red to blue, motor should go up...
Jumper from red to green, motor should go down...
With that being said, you may have a water logged switch in the
control box!

I would say that if your not even getting the click, then the solenoid or switch may be to blame. When you hit the switch to trim the motor, it is actually a low current switch that is activating a solenoid on the starboard side of the choke plate. The solenoid then sends the high current signal to the motor to make it move. That solenoid makes a very distinct click. If you are not even getting a click, you may have a bad solenoid, switch, or wiring relating to the same. Do you have more than one switch for tilt or just the one on the controls? I have a switch on the transom on my bass boat which has an 89 blackmax 150 on it and I know a lot of them even had one on the cowling too. Could be as simple as a solenoid or switch but I'd definetly take sandman's advice and seal up the wires too. Certianly cant hurt.

Forgot to mention the up trim has been working all along.

Only switch is a separate toggle on dash that I just replaced.

Not sure if the trim has slowed, only had the boat since July.

Sounds like I should check the solenoid on stbd side of choke plate first.

I'll check where the wires go into bracket when I pull it out to install gps transducer.

Where are the id #'s located on the powerhead?

I would like to find out what year the motor is.

Problem sounds electrical since you have no sounds. Corrosion on terminals /studs, Possibly bad contact. Solenoid should click. Clean the connections. Brushes are probably tired too. Change, them. Commutator may be bad, and or armature may be bad or need cleaning. I would pull the trim motor, take it down to the auto electric shop and they'll make it right for 60-80 bucks...

Make sure your hydraulic reservoir is full.

There should be small freezeplug on the top of the block just behind the flywheel that has the s/n etched in it

Glad to see you got it worked out, buddy. Electrical can be a bear sometimes. These folks help me out so much with boat stuff that I'm eager to help when I actually know something! Lol. I've been doing 12 v electrical as a career for 13 years so when it comes to wires I'm your man. Everything else.....that's why I'm here.
