repowering with 250 yamaha
I have a 23' SC with closed transom. I can get a new 2003 250 Yamaha OX66 w/30 inch shaft at a good price. Can this 30 inch shaft engine be mounted as a single engine on a bracket? Any suggestions? - aaf

The most common recommendation and the way most of the guys who are repowering are going with either a Hermco FB bracket or a Stainless marine bracket.
Check the links on the homepage for the Hermco link. There are many posts in the recent history to review as well. How good of a deal are you getting? I'm may be repowering in a few months as well. Dink |

I dont see why not just make sure it has enough flotation on the bracket to compensate for the motor weight. I have a 225 OX66 30 on the transom and it does great. You will have more than enough power thats for sure.

Getting the 30" yamaha 250 and a SeaMark/Hermco bracket would be a great combo.

If I'm not mistaken, I think a 30" shaft motor would require a "TWIN OB BRACKET" and then the flotation lbs would be excessive [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

A Ft Laud dealer checked through his computer listings to find an older, but new (under warranty) model Yamaha 250; he located one, counter-rotation, with a 30" shaft, asking $9,300.00 (without gauges, harness, etc.). He said rigging it up, parts and labor, would bring total to $11,000.00. But my worry is: if I use a single bracket... an old (but never used) cast-aluminum Gil bracket that I've been holding for now... how do I make allowance for the longer (5 inch longer) shaft?

Fellowship: do you have a bracket, or is your 225 on the transom? If it's a 30" shaft, how did you determine where to locate the engine...how much higher did you have to place it, given the extra shaft length? Is there a "formula" to determine this? Thanks, aaf

My transom original was set up at 30 high. The previous owner had twin 25 motors on the transom. When I re did my transom I kept it at 30 but only put one 30 225 in the center on the transom (no bracket). If you use a bracket, I would use one that is set up for twins, in that way there will be enough flotation for one heaver motor in the center. Is your transom 25 or 30 high from the center line of the transom??? If it is 30 you are there, but if it is 25 up from the center line you have problems to fix or you need a 25 shaft motor. As for finding the center of the transom you measuring a X from the bottom of your hull steps to the opposite side of the top of the transom do both sides same length will cause a X and X marks the spot of your center of the transom then measure correctly from the top to drill your holes. As far as I know, yes you could put that engine on the bracket if???? If the bracket is built to hold the weight and power. If it is designed for a 25" shaft you can get a jack plate that could raise it 5", but if you do that remember it will probably move the engine back a few inches which would cause more stress at the transom. It could work, but I would definetly do some measuring and calculating first. If the bracket is rated for a single 250hp 25" thats all I would put on it. Good luck I hope you find an easy way.
