Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Decided the other day that I didn't like the shape of the transom outter skin so I sanded it down to fiberglass and filled in the areas that I didn't like with 20oz matt. Got it pretty close, now im gonna put a thin layer of filler over the whole transom and sand till im happy and hopefully that will be early enough to get the first coat of paint on thurs.
Then just as I was leaving to out for the evening the UPS man walked up my stairs to deliver the new 18" engine bracket from stainless marine. |

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
Busy day on the LITTLE GIGOLOT today keith stopped by and helped me with the measuring and layout of the transom template. Rough sanded all the fresh fiberglass and put a thin layer of filler across the transom then sanded it down and put the first coat of INTERLUX on the transom. I knew before I painted it that the transom wasn't perfect but its hard to see whats wrong with no shine. It turned out better than I thought it would but still have a little bit of filling to get it near perfect. When its all said and done, the sides will be blue, the gunnels, bottom and the transom below the outter chine will be white. Thinking of a stripe where the colors change on the hull. But what color, Maybe black to blend the bracket better?
BRACKET TEMPLATE FILLER SANDED DOWN TO NEAR PAPER THIN FIRST COAT OF PAINT WENT ON TRANSOM TODAY BRACKET PUT ON FOR COLOR CONTRAST I THINK THE BLACK BRACKET AND CHARCOAL MOTOR WILL BE A GOOD CONTRAST. WHAT DO YOU THINK? |

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
got the motor mounted today. Its only got two bolts holding it on till I get to boaters world to get some more stainless nuts but its not getting wet for a few weeks anyway.
Now all I need is the hydralic steering system. Ex-roommate is supposed to buy it for christmas gift but if not I will order it in three weeks. 5200 to seal the bracket to the transom. rear view side view motor down motor on trailer stops motor way up |

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
A couple of observation's after the fact.
The bracket should have been mocked up dry and then taped around with a 1/4in space between the bracket and tape on the transom and then the same on the bracket with a 3/16 to 1/4in space from the mounting surface. After the bracket was bolted up, use you finger to make a clean fillet of the 5200. Then the tape is peeled off to have a clean line. The 5200 should have been Black. The 5200 should have been applied all the way around all the bolt hole's too. Just suggestion's for the future. |

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
I put 5200 in the holes and a good amount on every bolt and "screwed" them in to get a good coat on the entired surface of the bolt/hole.I pretty much used an entired cault tube putting the baracket on. The bracket is rounded so I can still come back with black around the outside. Have a good amount of caulk that seeped inside the bracket and outside the bracket. I don't really think its possible I will get any water intrusion with the amount of 5200 I used, but if I do its a composite transom that will not be affected by water according to the manufacturer of the composite.

Re: 1970 19' bowrider progress.
OK, gotta question to ask. I am starting the process of removing the three layers of anti-foulant from the hull. What kinda paint would be good to paint the bottom so it doesn't wear to much on a bunk trailer?
