Seafari Help

Ok guys, I need some help from Seafari owners. I picked up RyanK's Seafari... 1972 with IO. I really haven't had the chance to explore it. The battery is mounted on the deck on the starboard side of the motorbox in a a angle aluminum tray. Where was the it originally located? I assume in the bilge close to the engine. This boat pre-dates the rear seat/boxes. Also two thru hulls below the waterline on the foward third of the hull. What do these drain? Thanks in advance. Dave

Battery sits in front of the motor.

There is one forward thru hull on our 25 below the waterline. It is for a suction line to the galley tap. Our Seafari is used in fresh water so it works well for us. Possibly one of yours is used for the same reason. Maybe the other was for a fresh\saltwater washdown??? The drain for the sink is above the waterline on the port side.

Our batteries are in the bilge on each side of the engine.

Thanks for the replies. I really need to spend a few hours going over the whole boat and seeing what is what. About all I've had a chance to do is pop open the motor box and give the boat a good washdown. Perhaps this weekend I'll get an opportunity to check things out.

Dave - those thru hulls are the inlet and outlet for the marine head in the cabin. Denny

Thank's Denny. I had assumed that the head was a port-o-let type. I've got a lot to learn about Seafaris. I've been a little short of spare time and it's about 40 minutes to Ken's SeaCraft Compound where she sits. I haven't been able to check things out. I really need to shufle boats so I can park her at the house and go through everything. The hull deck and cabin are all solid so it's mostly running gear and electrical that needs a thorough checkout. Motor seems to run fine but needs a solenoid. It was a deal and a diamond in the rough. Thanks again for the info.

Hell of a deal you got on that boat Dave - those 4 cyl I/O's are 5 mpg rigs! The Seafari is probably the most versatile of all the Seacraft models, and appeared to be one of Carl Moesly's favorites, as he had one after he retired from a couple of circumnavigations in sailboats. He ran one from Hobe Sound all the way up the ICW to Jacksonville, and then down the St. Johns river to Sanford, and also circumnavigated Forida with it, via the Lake Okeechobee waterway, down the west coast to the keys and back up the ICW to Hobe Sound! They're great for diving, offshore trolling, and very comfortable for spending a night aboard at our gatherings! I think the I/O's also had a galley seat as standard, and that's also real handy for staying aboard! Looking forward to seeing that boat at our next gathering! Denny

It does have the the original galley seat. The first Seacraft I can remember seeing was a SeaFari with twin 70's. I've wanted one ever since. The 5 mpg is right up my alley with the current economy and fuel prices. Do you have shut off valves on the head thru hulls? When I fished with a friend a lot on his Blackfin we where checked by the authorities on more than one occasion to make sure we had the y-valve physically secured. (we used zip ties) It seems to me to be a great "messin' around" boat. With head and cabin the better half will be more likely to ride along. Dave

Those marine heads are now illegal unless they're plumbed to a holding tank and the Y-valve for overboard dump disabled, although it's legal to use them outside 3 mile limit and in Bahamas. I've never been stopped or inspected, but mine was so old that the hand pump needed rebuilding anyway, so I pulled it, plugged the holes and installed a portapottie. That porcelain head is heavy, although don't know if it's any heavier than the 3.5 gal of water in portable. Helps balance and ride to have a little weight up there anyway!
