Delayed report on Teak redo...
Did not want to clean and oil my teak again. It didn't last very long, as you all know. So, I took Bushwacker's advise and went with the epiphanes varnish, ran everything through a planer due to the excessive graining from age, sanded the edges smooth and varnished away. BTW, I made the under gunwale rod holders out of brazilian teak. The console rod holders, rear hatches and console strip are original to the boat.
I used a piece of Ipe as a spacer for the top portion of the console RH so the rods wouldn't hit the grab rail. Very pleased with the epiphanes product. 7 coats!

Re: Delayed report on Teak redo...
Epiphanes from West Marine. I'm sure other stores sell it, though.

Re: Delayed report on Teak redo...
Lookin' good! 7 coats ought to hold up pretty well. That's what I used and mine still looks good after 3-4 years. Do you keep your boat covered? That won't stop the teak oil from oxidizing and turning dark but it will make a big difference with varnish! Denny

Re: Delayed report on Teak redo...
I do keep it covered now. I recently was given this nice metal carport and it has worked out great.

Re: Delayed report on Teak redo...
you can get epiphanes at west marine, jamestown distributors, or any decent boat store. west marine actually slaps their brand on the epiphanes product (it still has the "epiphanes lion") and sell it for a few bucks less. i used the same process on my hatches when i built them a few years ago. it takes a long time to dry (24 hrs) and they recommend a total of at least 4 coats, thinned progressively less, but you wind up with a beautiful product thats iron clad. i actually have used it on mahogany countertops in my house and it wears like iron.
