IRL problems

Not sure how many of us CSC folks are members of the CCA, however wanted to be sure those that are to read the "A Lagoon on its last?" article in this month's Tide magazine. I thought Tampa Bay had some problems, however after this years spring gathering at Long Point things around TB are not bad at all. I could not believe how much "muck" was in the Indian River Lagoon. Let's hope it can be turned around!

You can`t even keep live gogs in a pen at Jupiter inlet by SeaSport marina.
These hardy bait die in a tidal inlet. The seagrass restoration project is dying.

Until Big Sugar and big ag are held to any standard of rational practices, we will all suffer.

It has taken a long time for this to happen.
When Port Canaveral was fitted for locks and cut off the
natural flushing action, was the beginning of the end.

I thought they installed the locks to eliminate current in the inlet so they could easily bring in sections of the Saturn V on barges from the NASA test facilities in La. for the Apollo Program. Since that program has only been over for about 40 years now, is there any reason they just couldn't leave the locks open now? Sounds like the additional tidal flushing action might be especially useful now to help offset the damage from all the freshwater dumping from Lake O!

BTW, just noticed that Lake O has dropped about a foot in the last month since we didn't have much rain in October and may in fact be in the early stages of a drought! Looks like the water management folks guessed wrong again and would have not had to release all that water! But hindsite is always 20/20, and in all fairness, they're in a no-win situation. If we'd had a big hurricane and the levee had failed, it would have been Katrina all over again, and they would have been hung out to dry!

Sandy-Encon in Jupiter stopped the Army Corps from permanently dumping that Lake O water into the Loxahatchee back in the 60's, they fought it and won. My dad was part of the group that won. Forget the "wild and scenic" designation if that happened!
