Meads,

A Mercury 200hp Saltwater gives you that good punch. I'm curious to see what everyone thinks is the perfect motor for the 20c.c. A 150hp is perfect too and weight is just about identical. Why not that extra power when facing rough blue water.

When I initially bought my 20'CC, it had a 130hp Yamaha Saltwater Series engine on it and it would FLY. The boat only weighs 1650 pounds, you DO NOT need to get to the Big Rock in 20 minutes! For use around Morehead, Beaufort Inlet, Harkers, and well up the East Side towards the Atlas Tanker, you would be just fine with something in the 130-150 range.

As to specific engines, there is likely only one person among the membership of this site that will argue with you against the Suzuki 4-stroke 115/140's.....and it's not me.

Keep an eye on the weight, they are tail-heavy boats...

Don't know about the older models, but my 2001 Seacraft sports a 130 hp Honda which weighs in at 500 lbs+, making trim tabs a must to get the bow down for a smooth ride .

"Does raising the transom 5# factor into the equation?" - NO, raising the transom does not affect how high your floor is relative to sea level, which is the real issue.

580#'s on a SeaCraft 20' without a floatation bracket? - makes my feet cold just thinking about it.

Meads,

For an outboard, I like the a Suzuki 140 4S.

For an I/O, I like the Cummins Merc 1.7 (120 HP)Alpha. At just over $9,000, and 650 pounds, It may be a tad heavy, but you won't be re-powering anytime soon...

I am in the process of restoring a 1974 SF20. After much research, I chose a Merc 200 EFI. Weight is very much a factor on this boat due to the close proximation of the deck and the actual waterline. Also, I have had this boat powered by a 135 Evinrude, 175 Mariner, and a 200 Johnson. 200 HP is ideal for me. The weight of the new Merc 200 EFI is the same as the 150 and I like the extra kick of a 200.
