Sliding cooler seat removal

Does anyone know if there is a way to remove the sliding bench seat on a 1974 20 SF without unscrewing the rails on the deck that it slides on. There does not appear to be enough room to slide it off backwards and there does not appear to be a release. It seems logical that you could remove seat without removing rails though!
