Can't speak for the outboard lower units, but I know several guys that run I/O's and swear by the upper and lower units by SEI? One who is a Mercruiser mechanic has installed a lot of the SEI units with very good results.Even the warranty on them is better.
He can't even buy the gears for the price that the entire I/O from SEI costs.I hear more good than bad about SEI.
I know that if my Mercruiser I/O craps out, I'll be going with an SEI unit
