Your question is not dumb...I think we have all asked it at some time or another...

Depending on how badly oxidized it is would determine how far to take it...I have a light blue hull that was pretty shot...no gloss at all..tried to compound it with minimal result. So I took it to the next step and wet sanded the hull...WOW what a difference used 1000 or 1200 and kept it wet with a spray bottle...you could feel the paper release and become very easy to move around as it did its work. I then compounded with a 7" Makita buffer and then waxed it..I was real happy with the result.
