Nick, the hatch was up just enough for water to trickle in and I think once the water reached the vents it was all over. I see boats all the time that hang indefinitely with the transom well under water, at the same line as Peter's. My thoughts are if the vents weren't there it probably would have just hung at a certain point (maybe?).
His boat actually wasn't done sinking when I got there. The pic with the boat on its side was the state when I arrived. Then out of nowhere it started the death roll and the top went under.
