Brackets?

I am a new seacraft owner. I am very excited about owning an older seacraft and have a million question on my mind about them. One question is what are the advantages of having a bracket versus just a transom mount? I have an 86 seacraft with a notched bracket and will probably have to do some work on it in a few years. For now I am just going to ride around in it an have fun. The projects will be my next move.
