Default Livewell

I have a 2000 SC21 with an in-deck livewell- the issue is that the livewell fills with rainwater or water from when I'm washing down-so if it's not in use I have to constantly drain it to avoid the algae/grime thing. I would rather not gasket the lid since everyone tells me that I'll be replacing the gasket constantly so I was considering drilling two drain holes, one on each side of the channel that the lid fits into, for drainage directly into the bilge. My theory being that as water drains into the channel off the deck, it could drain into the bilge before it filled the channel and then overflowed into the livewell. Anyone see any problems with doing this? I had one guy tell me that it could be a safety issue if I took a wave over the bow and filled the boat with alot of water, but most of that is going out the scuppers anyway so I don't agree- comments? Thanks!
