Tank vents on a 20 center console

That's where mine is, on the starboard side of the console. Curiously, the first time I "filled it" (filler is port side, top of console...yuck!), moderate flow, it burped twice, spewing fuel across the top of the console. Then, it didn't shut off when full and actually pushed fuel out the vent. What a mess...
I assume that's normal, and I just have to be more careful about flow rate, and always keep a towel/cloth around the filler hole.
