20 or 23?

I bought a 78 20MA for a project. Im doubting now that I will have enough room. I will always have at least 4 or more on it. It will always stay on a lake with possibly one trip a year to the coast. Im considering a 23. What are some thoughts from those that have or have had both? If I cant find a bigger SC, what are the opinions on other brand hulls? Im not against gutting a cuddy hull to make a larger CC. There are lots of 22-27' cabin cruisers for $1000 or less local to me, but Im not familiar with what some of the older quality boats are.
