Seeking Advice: Wet sanding 41 year old gel coat "step" after decal removal?

I used a DA sander with 800 grit disc, sanded the hull sides and compounded with 3M Super Duty compound #05954 in the black bottle. That gelcoat is a lot tougher than you think.
