The purpose of 2 batteries it to always have a back up just incase one goes bad you just have to turn the switch to # 2 or both. Most guys will have a starting battery and the other for electronics in that way when you start the motor the electronics would go out or possibly blow a fuse. If I am making a long run I will on occasion use both batteries to help put some extra juice in both of them, but as a rule I use only one for the motor and the other for electronics. I also will charge the batteries at home after 2 or 3 trips just to keep both fully charged.
