I think I would spend a weekend rebuilding the original hatch. The metal one would be hot on the feet and if you matched the thickness of the hatch it might weigh more than if you replaced the core with plywood. If you used a composite material than I know that the metal would be more. The second reason I would rebuild is to keep the boat original.
