Jason , I did that exact thing to my 87, just screwed the top back on and sealed it, it makes a ton of difference for access, and I've had no probs since

Thanks everybody-

The boat is finished just wrapped it up last weekend. I will get some pictures online when I download them from the camera.

I wound up putting in a new access hatch in the front of the motor, that did little more than the original, and then cutting an access port in the aft section of the live well this made a huge difference to accessability and still provides the owner with storage, although it renders the livewell useless.
