Just to be sure, when i removed the thermostat at the biginning of the season to test it i was pretty sure i put it back in the same way as i took it out. This thermostat is shaped kinda like a pyrimid. Which way should the point of the pyrimid be facing, up or down. I can't remember now which way i put it back in but i will check when i found out which was is correct. Thanks guys i will check this stuff out and let you know when i can.

Sounds like you put it in the right way because if you installed it backward it would be overheating.

Chance look real carefully at the connection of the wires at the sender on the engine, if they are dirty then it throws the whole reading off due to the extra resistance, clean them real good and see if it helps. Best way to tell what its really doing is shoot the thermostat cover(and other stuff like manifolds) with a infared temp tester after(and while) you run it, we have one at work and it is the best way to find out how hot different parts of the engine are running. If I remember right I saw you this spring down at Barn Hill? Sharp boat I like the dog house, I thought I had seen your boat somewhere before. Rod Man last week someone pulled a 1180 lber out of the bay

Chance,
The theromstat should be installed crown (pyramid) up with the flat button side down. If the motor is actually running cold (bellow 180) you're going to GREATLY acelarate the wear on your motor. Cylinder walls will wear from poor lubrication and increased piston/wall clearance. Bearings and journals will also be the worse for wear because the oil will not be functioning optimally. With in reason it's actually better to run too hot that too cold. A motor that spends a few years at 220 will be in better shape than one at 170. Any ways... Are you still mored in plymouth? I've got a 23'hydrosport skiff in the harbor. If possible, I'd like to check out your boat. I'm going through a 23 inboard with my buddy kmodi in my shop in carver and would love to pick your brain. Great looking boat, good luck. |

Well i checked her out today, and my first step was the thermostat. I ran the engine for about 20 minutes before. then waited 5-10 minutes and removed the thermostat, and it was open. Which i believe means it was stuck open. I didn't have a new one so i tried to clean it and put it back in. Then started it and the gauge started to move after about 3 minutes. My gauge does not have numbers on it just marks, and it got to the first mark just above the "C" and stayed there for the next 20 minutes at idle. Is it even worth it to try to clean a thermostat or should i just get a new on. Wires and connections all looked good and tight. Hopefully i fixed it or will just need to get a new stat. Thanks for all the help again guys.

If ya think its stuck, throw it out. You dont want to risk it getting stuck closed. On a side note Chance what type of lay up did you use on your dog house? I'm starting one this fall and don't want to over/under do it on the glass. Trying to keep it light but strong, gonna use divynicell(closed cell foam) instead of plywood.
