Inboard running cold

The theromstat should be installed crown (pyramid) up with the flat button side down. If the motor is actually running cold (bellow 180) you're going to GREATLY acelarate the wear on your motor. Cylinder walls will wear from poor lubrication and increased piston/wall clearance. Bearings and journals will also be the worse for wear because the oil will not be functioning optimally. With in reason it's actually better to run too hot that too cold. A motor that spends a few years at 220 will be in better shape than one at 170.
