I have taken my 20' Seafari up to 85 miles offshore by carrying extra fuel on board, and have taken a Seafari 60 miles across the Gulfstream to the Bahamas many times.
Carry a kicker or have twin engines; and the life raft, EPIRB, and a filed floatplan are absolute essentials. Remember, the sea is capricious and can turn on you in a moment.
