Default 20ft Master Angler

Does anyone know how many 20ft Master Anglers were produced compared to the sport fish version? I have a 1976 20ft Master Angler that I rebuilt last year. I see very very few of these boats on the water or anywhere that have been brought back to life. Are they a bit more rare or do people just prefer the 'sport fish' version of the 20 Secraft. Are there any ride differences that anyone can obviously notice. I know there are a lot of 20 owners, so here's a topic for conversation.

Just looking for some input on a question thats been floating around in my head for sometime.
All input would be appreciated. Thanks

According to the production numbers between 1970 and 1980 there was a total of 327 20MA built compared to 1,984 of the 20SF. The SF number is a combo of IO and OB versions. Also they started making the MA in 1975.

I have a 75 20MA and it rides pretty good!

This is in the brochures section and gives the break down by year.

I bought a 1970 Seacraft a while back with a MA gunnel cap. It had a FLZ HIN, but I know the hull was built before 1972 b/c of the 4 stringer setup . . . Probably means that there are only 326 left.

They are a good deal more rare since they were only done between '75 and '80 and nobody picked up that model in the next few years, I love mine with the wide gunnels like an 18. Never thought I would find one, let alone within waking distance.

I've noticed there are fewer of the Master Anglers around then the 20 SF's. There are even fewer that have been restored.

When I found my 20 MA I wasen't looking specifically for a Master Angler...I just came across a 20 and I kinda fell in love with it. I didn't even know the difference between the two until I came to this site.

I will say though the MA does seem a little more fisherman friendly. I like the higher wider gunnels. I'm kinda tall and the gunnels on the MA are at touch higher then my knees (big plus) while the gunnels on my neighbors SF are below my knees.

I also like the flush bowrail on the MA's and the deck plan which seems more open then the 20SF.

That said, I think the SF has nicer lines then the MA series.

So, guys below is a link to my project page on this site. Now we have two ice blue Sea Craft MA's around !

I'm going to look at a 1976 20MA on Monday, besides soft decks is there anything I should look out for? Some of you may have seen it on ebay over the past week. Has a bracket and a 175 evenrude, sank last month so it needs everything.

Running new wires is a cake walk and you would probably need to do it anyway, so your gain.

Hey tunaorlater, do you also post on Noreast ? Are you the guy with that Northerbay 36 ? If so welcome to the site, I'm from Long Island, the Jones Inlet area. With the master anglers you need to pay attention to the decks, transom and topcap core...all of which might need attention. Thats what had to do with my 78.

If she only needs wires then your in pretty good shape. BTW what kind of bracket does that boat have ?

Thats me, I am figuring the deck is shot and transom also. Not paying much for the boat so I don't care too much. I did a 23 Tsunami and 23CC before I finished the Northern Bay so I know what issues Seacrafts have . I am hoping its good enough for a repower and rewire to get me through next year then complete resore the following winter. I don't believe the bracketis one of these one's I'm reading about here so thats another reason I want to use the boat for a season to see if I want it or not. It currently has a 175hp evenrude and it looks as though it sat real deep in the stearn.

Grady, your project is coming along great, love that color.

Just emailed you a picture of the boat.

That's interesting Tuna. Bought my 1979 20 MA in 1996. Had no clue of the internet nor this site. She had a "rigged" 1985 Merc 200 BlackMax. I did not survey her, but did seatrial her myself in Sarasota. Dragged her home with an old Toyota 4X4, launched her with a boatload, cooler to match, and she BLEW!!! (Spent two seasons with local experts trying to rebuild her). Three years later I could afford a new transom, complete rewire, new Johnson 175 2S, and though I can't remember originally, she was not self-bailing. If she was, I never noticed...like 20 minutes before she smoked. Didn't have the money, nor the information, but raising the transom and floor seemed unnecessary at the time. Rerouted the floor drains into the bilge (I know!), and had additional pumps placed in her. Still 'til this day, not sure that she really sits real deep in the stern.

If I were not to raise the transom, I think I would try an inexpensive manual jack plate, find her sweet spot, and set it and forget it.

Right now she's blistering quick, doesn't draw anything alarming, doesn't sip fuel, and smokes very nicely. But she's propped right, handles like a dream, and ocassionally flies. I love it.

Note: Not sure of what appears to be original 68 gallon fuel cell. Has abrupt 90* on top of tank where fuel line feeds to outboard. Taller than floor hatch allows, hence, only soft spot in entire floor. Everything else solid. Happy Thanksgiving! Part II.
