First, I wouldn't assume that it's the original 35 year old aluminum tank. But if it's configured the same, the fuel sending unit should be under the console, just to the inboard side of where the rigging comes thru the deck.

I'm not near my boat, so I can't give you an exact measurement. Hopefully you will find a "Pie" hatch already there.
