Default used repower question

Well after 31 years my merc 175 has given up the ghost. She needs a lower unit and switch boxes just get it to run again. so i am on the hunt for a used out board. A merc would be nice since i have all the controlls. My question is what are othergood choices,. i have heard the looper jonrudes where good but had there issues. I know nothing about the older suzuki or yamahas. What are things to look for and things to look out for? I am looking for something between 150hp to 200 max,so hits or tips to look for are appricated good years to look for and stay away from.I am trying to go for something 15 years or newer.

any used yamaha 2 stroke that has been taken care of is good to go, if earlier than 95 check the shift pin , watch out for some early 2000 hpdi motors if they have not had updates done, Make sure you compression and leak down check any motor you buy. Good luck

all the jap motors have corrision issues in those years - the OMC stuff is easy to maintain and work on - power packs are their only booger but a DIY switch - decarbs are also their downfall they just need them. If I was buying thats what I would buy - my EFI Merc is killing me with aggrevation

Your Dogness,
Have you ever been to the marine doctors. Serious skillz on that site.

Love my `96 rude 150. After `98 OMC had that ficht meltdown and quality was done! When BRP took the reins no worries. `02?

Check out ARG Marine in Riviera Beach. They sell lots of used motors and seem to be a pretty good outfit.

Seriously...??

Once you go black, you can't go back!!

After 31 years of good service, you would even think of changing brands????

Just my 2¢ worth..

See ya, Ken

You might send Bigshrimpin' a note. He is a Merc wizard & usually has '80s and '90s Merc parts for a fraction of what you might pay elsewhere. I got a lower end from him recently. He may have some lower ends available and likely some switch boxes. That old Merc is very light compared to the later stuff in that hp range. If your compression is still pretty even, I'd look to fixin' it. just my $.02

I have an 88 yamaha 175 for sale, but it is a way north of you. But I am motivated. I ran it 10 days ago on muffs, and it has a new shift rod.
