First, Welcome to CSC.

Second, get yourself the Mercury factory service manual for your motor. You can usually find a good deal on Ebay. Don't get one of the after market manuals.

Third, if the 2001 is the same as my '96, there are two nuts on each side, one in the center front, and one at the rear concealed above the trim tab anode, six total.
