A mold is the way to go. Way less fairing and you don't have a part full of fairing compound that will crack. Did I mention less fairing... Less sanding the better.
I use this tool you can get from a fiberglass supplier, it has two sides for large radius and smaller radiuses. The pink stuff is clay.
