Default 1977 sea craft sceptre restoration

I recently purchased a '77 sceptre that needs steering stem and linkage, gauges, harness. It does have a Mercury 85hp (1985)on it now that is in running condition but I don't have it wired up properly. I am able to jump it to make her run. The hull and deck are in awesome condition. I'm new to the boating community as I have just moved to naples FL and want to enjoy the water on a boat that is a classic but affordable. I'm wondering if I should just buy a newer motor with the harness and move forward on getting her operational? Or should I stick with what I have and move forward. Also what about the steering linkage and stem? Can I just get any brand? I know length has to match. Also about gauges... Can I use any aftermarket or are these gauges available(stock). Thanks. Can't wait to get her back on the water.
