I usually like to stay away from the other boats a bit. There is a lot of reef south of Key West to fish. We used to stay a few days at Marquesas and got there by heading towards the NW channel, then through the lakes area to Boca Grande. There are channel markers out there nowdays (lot of flats). Most of the time, we went in the cooler months and fished in 10 to 20 feet of water and caught some big muttons.
The area near Cosgrove should be good. One time I headed south from there after bottom fishing and trolled back to Key West, catching a couple of decent Dolphin.
There is a lot to see out there and if you do decide to go out that way, watch out for the coral heads near the south of Marquesas. Ron.
