Default Transom help

Hey guys!

First time Seacraft owner and first time restore! I have a 1984 20’ Master Angler. I have gotten the old transom out and all cleaned up. My plans are to glass in the transom no more cut out. Also, plans are to put a swim platform and a 200hp 4 stroke Suzuki on the back. My question is what material should I go with to redo the transom. Marine plywood or Coosa? Or anything else? What thickness should I do? Original transom that I just removed was 2”. I plan on moving center console and fuel tank forward to offset the weight. I just want to make sure that I’m using the suggested material. If it needs to be thicker for the additional weight would be good to know in advance.

Thanks!!!

I used thermolite. It’s like coosa. I’ll never put wood in my boat again (except for teak as decorative materials).

Termites are an issue here.

Bugs won’t eat
Less water absorbent
Lighter
Stronger
Works like wood.

It’s worth the difference from plywood. I’d also consider the sea cast stuff. Some guys here have had good results.
Make sure you check out the cog thread it’s very helpful.

I don’t know much about the MA but I ultimately decided not to mess with mine too much. These seacraft were made right back in the day. I kept most stuff factory. I moved my batts forward. Installing trim tabs and a lifting prop. Should keep my ride pretty close to factory.

I would use the lightest material I could find and find a lighter motor.

Coosa bluewater 26 is my preferred transom core. Pricey but worth it.

I used Airex AKA Penske board on my transom. I know some will disagree, but with the quality composites out there now, I dont think it makes sense to use marine ply anymore

also, another question for another thread, but that is a mighty heavy outboard to hang on there. i'd strongly consider something lighter if i were you

So I was basing my decision off of the boat listed below. It has a mercury 200 on it. The Suzuki is a 20lb heavier difference. I’ve seen another 20 with a Suzuki on it. I talked to both owners these boats are topping out at 50+ mph and seem to be floating fine.
