John, years ago when most outboards had 20" shafts (this was mid 70's when V6 O/B just came out)prior to this most 23's had twins(mine had twin 65 hp. mercs. talk about a dog!)A local guy put a 20" motor on his 23 fter. I think he had to cut a deeper transom notch. His motor was half submerged a good bit of the time. It's not a good idea unless you plan to rig a snorkel for the motor.

You will have to add 5" to the transom heighth to accomodate twin 25" shaft motors or a 30" shaft single.I do this by getting a 2" x 6" board from lumber yard rip it to 5" and glass it on top of the existing transom cut out.

The easyest way to make the 25" to a 30" is to purchase a a 5 " step bracket. THey sell for under 175.00. We also use these to make a 25" engine work on a 20" transome. THe key is haveing a good transome to bolt it to. It will bolt into the holes that are already in the hull so there is no drilling new holes. As for stepping it down with a bracket I caint see the steering working.
