Re: Through transom scuppers
Thanks miles, that picture really helps. I will go out to the boat tommorrow hopefully and try to take some measurements and a few pics. I would think this would be able to work for us inboards as we don't have the weight sitting on the back. Thanks for the help guys. I will be doing the work sometime this winter and will for sure post some pictures.

Re: Through transom scuppers
I just went down and took some quick measurments and pics and i don't think it will work. it was aprox 25.5 inches from the inside from the deck to the top of transom, when i transfered that measurement to the outside it came right at water level. here are some pics of it:

Re: Through transom scuppers
My through the floor drains appear to be glassed in....'74 Tsunami. Is that the norm or was that a mod someone did later??? I want to go through the transom as well...I was going to raise the floor about 1.5 inches and though about leaving the through floor in the corners and just plug them. I like bonefish's scuppers...that may be my model. Everything I've seen on this site about the 23's looks like they would drain fine with through transom scuppers...the decks looks about 2-3 inches above the water line...???

Re: Through transom scuppers
Does water come up the scuppers you have now when there are two guys on one side in the stern? If so then it will not work. I know it wont work on my boat... I'll need the ping pong balls. Our commercial salmon boats in Alaska used to have the holes thru the back of the transom like you described on the Lobster boats. They were rather large 3 inch holes. No flaps no nothing just holes. When we filled the boat with a heavy load of fish we had round plugs that screwed into the holes from the inside of the boat. That way we did not take on water with the heavy load. I'm a believer that what ever size hole you make in your transom for scuppers you should be able to plug it from the inside of the boat in an emergency should your outside water intrusion device fail.

Re: Through transom scuppers
Strick, you make a good point and after you mentioned that I remember I did have to keep mine plugged on the old boat a lot of the time when there were two people in the stern. Now to go against the grain a little, and since i leave my boat in the water as Chance does, I like the drains going out the bottom. They really work great for rainwater and to me unless I am heavy on fuel they are really not a big deal- I just put the plugs in when I first get in the boat and forget about it. I can remove them again when I am running if for some reason I need two. If just me in the boat I dont need to plug them at all. I think you are making a wise desicion not messing with them Chance. Those pix of your boat sure look nice too!

Re: Through transom scuppers
I was hoping it would be just a matter of making new ones ala bonefish. I guess I better rethink that. What's the best method of pulling out the brass tubes in the floor drains...??....looks like I could grind off the flange and just push them out.
Here a couple of shots I snapped by holding a camera under the floor. Look like the floor has a built up area that mates to a built up area on the hull. I'm wondering if the white stuff is the adhesive they used to put the liner in?? You can see the seam pretty clearly....I assume if the brass tube leaks then it would leak into the hull through the seam??? You can see the shape of the drain channel along the back at the top of the photos.... Portside Starboard side |
