I just looked at my 1981 edition Clymer manual for Mercury inline 4 and inline 6 motors.

For 1977-1981 Mercury inline 6 motors, it lists maximum WOT RPM operating range as follows:

90 hp. - 5000-5500
115 hp - 5000-5500
140 hp - 5250-5750
150 hp - 5250-5750

For Mercury XS1500 inline 6 motors, all years, it lists WOT range as 5500-6250 rpms.

Tim (BigShrimpin) is very knowledgeable about Mercs, far more than I. Send him a shout and see what he says.
