I had this issue years ago with my 99 Johnson 175. Engine cranking strong by ear. No fire. Called mechanic, and he told me the engine needed to spin 800 rpms to fire. Replaced a fairly new battery and BAM! Fired first shot. He was right and I was on the water within an hour, though I was most doubtful. Back when an Interstate Group 24 was 50 Bucks... Live and learn.

Tom,

Your starter may be different than mine, which is a reduction gear type, similar to Chrysler starters, but BRP lists a "Starter Bendix Lube", P/N 337016 (plastic tube) in my factory service manual. E-TEC owners manual says to apply it during 3 yr/300 hr service. Might be worth picking up a tube next time you get by your dealer. I need to get some too, as motor is 10 yrs old and I've never touched the starter! Denny
