i will be trying it out with mine. but i wonder... do i tell them the powerhead is '84 or do i tell them the rest of the motor is '91... hmmmm very fuzzy details...

Here is the actual wording of the applicable statute:

(2) ANTIQUE VESSEL REGISTRATION FEE.--

(a) A vessel that is at least 30 years old, used only for recreational purposes, and powered by the vessel's original-type power plant may be registered as an antique vessel. When applying for registration as an antique vessel, the owner of such a vessel shall submit certification, as prescribed by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or from a marine surveyor that the vessel meets the requirements of this paragraph.

(b) The registration number for an antique vessel shall be permanently attached to each side of the forward half of the vessel as provided in ss. 328.48 and 328.54.

(c) The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may issue a decal identifying the vessel as an antique vessel. The decal shall be displayed as provided in ss. 328.48 and 328.54.

The definition of "type" of power plant comes from the title application form and lists fuel and drive type:

gasoline, diesel, or other, PLUS outboard, inboard, sterndrive, or other.

SO, if your boat was originally powered by a gasoline fueled outboard, and it still is, it meets the requirements of the law. But if it was originally powered by a gas sterndrive, and is now an outboard, it does not meet the requirements.

Fr. Frank-My 23SF just hit 30 yrs, as it is hull #1 for 1979. Is there a defined power plant list? If not, I'm going to submit mine and see if they take a diesel jackshaft converted to outboards. (heck it didn't switch to sail power-unless those Mercs die 100 miles offshore )

This is just TOO good!!! My 23' SF is the sixth behind yours!! Hull 007, laid July 1978, however it's titled as a 1979. My Antique Vessel application is in the mail and hopefully I will get my antique sticker when my registration is due in May. Thanks to all for the heads up!!!

Naw. Florida title applications only ask if the motor is outboard, inboard, sterndrive, other, or none, and if the fuel is gasoline, diesel, or other.

The "definition" of the terms on the back of the form is non-binding, and just some bureaucrat's own interpretation. Especially when you consider that all outboard models came from the factory with no power at all 30 years ago. Power was added by the dealer, and it was possible to buy the boat without a motor and add one later.

I used to sell SeaCraft boats new 25 years ago, and we never received one from the factory with an outboard motor installed. We always offered the boat with whatever power the customer wanted to put on it, although we also offered "package deals" on boat, motor, and trailer.

My computer crashed over the weekend and just got back on again.

Seems like a bunch of talk over “Fuzzy Details” it seems that the supreme court of judgment is struggling on what to do.

Let me ask you a question if you got stopped by a Cop on a possible speeding fine or if you were standing in court before a judge would you rather be talking to a right wing hard nose conservative judge or cop? Or would you rather be talking to a easy going left wing “live and let live” liberal “good old boy” judge or cop???

In these cases I would want a break by someone being a nice guy, be a nice guy to your self.
If the State has written something with fuzzy details in it than take the info and interpret it in your favor not against yourself. Turn in the form and let them sort it our like I did. Be your own liberal cop or judge to yourself. After all there are a lot of forces in this world that wants to condemn you don’t do it to your self.
