Rodholder cavity length on older 20'

What is the longest size rod that you can fit in the gunwale rod storage area in the front of the older 20'? Hoping but doubting it is 9'. I should know, but I don't, and now I need to know. [img]images/icons/tongue.gif[/img]

My biggest boat rods are 7' and they fit easily in the under gunnel racks on my 1971 20'. A 9' rod is kind of big for boat use - How are you fishing and what species are you targeting?

I have a 9' sabiki rod that will fit however, the tip projects into the anchor well somewhat so you have to be careful when using the anchor to make sure you don't snag it.

BacDoc: fly rods. Most heavy SW fly rods are 9'. There are also a fair number of 8'6" models that are sometimes referred to as "boat rods", but all of mine are 9'.

9' fly rods will indeed fit, but there is a good deal of bend in the tip section. If that is unsatisfactory, Blue Water Designs makes the vertical fly rod holders that can be mounted on the console, backrest, or just about anywhere a vertical surface can be found.

I too was concerned about fly rod storage on my '71 20CC and have decided to go with the under-gunnel rod storage route when redoing the boat this winter and replacing the deck.

Thanks Mark. I used to have a 20' way back before I took up fly fishing, so rod length was not an issue. I'm back in the market for a 20' again. Everything comes full circle. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

I'm not too worried about the bend. I'll probably put some outdoor carpeting panels up in the bow section against the inside of the hull to protect the tips from vibration, scratching, etc. The vertical rod holders work well and I don't mind them when in transit, but it is nice to have most of your rods out of the way when you're fishing so that you don't foul a line or worse on vertical ones.
