Transom repair to 23 Sceptre inboard
I just bought a 1977 23 Sceptre inboard with a"punky" transom. The affected area extends from about 10" below the top all the way to the bottom.Moisture readings are high and hammer sounding tells me the plywood core is shot. This is not a load beearing surface like an outboard, and I would like feedback on possible repairs.(drilling, drying and epoxy injection for the short term)and major surgery in the long run if required. Access is limited from the inside because of the liner.Any feedback greatly appreciated,

Re: Transom repair to 23 Sceptre inboard
Botes1,
Run a search with the word "transom" in it and you'll find LOTS of info. Many of our members have done a transom replacement and have been really generous with sharing the info. |

Re: Transom repair to 23 Sceptre inboard
Hey Botes, welcome to the board- Myself and Tom from Boston had a nice conversation over the tely about our inboards yesterday and conversed on this subject. He is doing a major overhaul on his boatand did redo his transom (both our boats are c/c inboards). Anyways mine is fairly wet as well, but I am not going to do anything with it until I have to do a major gutting painting and everything else. I feel very comfortable with mine and as long as I am "catching" it doesnt bother me. The water does add some extra weight though I wouldnt think too much. When I had my boat hauled last year I drilled a couple of large holes and let them drip and drain(at first) for a couple of months. Before I filled them in again I used syringes and sucked all the water out I could and filled them back in with west system. I think Tom basically agreed and also said some of the boat yards he had talked with said not to worry about it either. Good luck to you, I would tell you if it concerns you too much to repair it and if like me you think, no pressure on it- no problem- lets fish. craig

Re: Transom repair to 23 Sceptre inboard
Check out "rotdoctor.com". Search for transom repair. My opinion, don't do anything.

Re: Transom repair to 23 Sceptre inboard
Nice boat, always wants one. I can tell you from my "gut rehab" of my 23' CC IB(75) that the transom core plug from my second exhaust port I added is almost two inches with alot of glass on both sides of the plywood. Luckily, my transom was pretty dry.
