Have an '82 Sceptre and the build quality is first rate. Stringers are glass-encapsulated, and I believe the decks are wood core. It still has the original transom which is now showing some signs of needing a replacement. The tank is original as well and is in great shape.

hello scott,

thanks for the reply. are there places where you inspect/see the stringers without cutting through the deck.
if you don't mind elaboring 'show sign'(crack or moving?) of needing work on the transom?
also, what engine and best crusing mpg do you get. thanks again

Edloh, I can safely say all '70's & '80's 23's have fiberglass stringers, and they very rarely go bad. They will soak up water, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

Here's a couple pic's of 23 stringers. It may be hard for you to know what your looking at, but there's guys here that do. And this is from a '72.

Good luck.

Those holes are accually for pouring the foam in. The chase' for the "stuffs" is to the right, and if you look down the stringer you can see the chase cutting threw again, it's hard to explain....

The only place to see the stringers without drilling is to lift the rear deck piece where an inboard engine would sit. The long hatch over the tank won't allow you to get a good view of the stringers unfortunately.

The transom has some cracking along the top edge due to a poor retrofit job about 15 years ago to accomodate a shorter OB shaft. Also, when you do the jump test on the OB, there is some minor flex.

Do you tell your father about the transom? I mentioned how his tank is 3 years older than mine and I could see the worry on his face. Oh well, all he cares about is speed anyway.
