Default twin 225's on a 23 scepter

Bought a 23 with mid 80 150 Mercs awhile ago. To avoid dealing with motor problems I am considering putting a couple of 2000/2001 225 Mercs on it (that are on a larger boat.) Has anyone run a 23 with 225? And did it perform OK.

Two 225 Mercs?

The 150's will make the boat fly, and in my opinion all of the motor you'll ever need. I have seen someone with a set of 200 yami's and it was insanly fast. I have the same boat (74 Tsunami) as you with twin 150 yami's and its a 50mph boat. Fast enough. I'd fear the larger 225's would add too much weight to the transom even if you raised the deck. I'm not an expert on seacrafts, thats just my opinion.

I can tell you this, your boat will easily plane and cruise with a single 225. Mine will plane easily on a single 150 and top out on a single motor at 24kts with 150 gal. of fuel.

I fear you will get poor handle performane in seas due to the transom weight. But... It will be fast

If the 225's are Opti's------
Can you say suicide!
I have ridden in 23 SF's with twin 200 opti's
and there close to 70mph.
You may want to re-think that option.

I have a 2005 225 Opti on 1974 23 Tsunami with bracket and hard top - boat planes up very easily and tops out at around 42 mph. Boat runs like a possessed demon !!! I could not imagine that boat with twin 200 or 225's- WOW

There was a 23 open near me with twin late 90's 250 Mercs and it was not slow. It had a non-floatation bracket and eventually succomed to davey jones's locker but I bet it was a thrill to drop the hammer on that ride. zoom zoom.

I am not advocating overpowering your boat but many 150, 200, 225 and 250's are the same block and in some cases the higher hp motors are lighter by 15lbs or so (see the 115 suzuki 4S and the 140 as an example) If you can get a deal on any of the V6's and are confident in your boating skills, boats integrity, and have an insurance policy that will cover you liability wise (this may be tough) it is an option.

Mariner- Are you crazy? Just kidding, I have the same set-up on a 23 SF and have yet to splash the boat. I'm thinking about getting wheelie bars on the back . Mine are carbed (I can drive from one fuel dock to the next very quickly). Each motor is 497Lbs., so the weight is on the high side, but with an ok floatation bracket and good scuppers it can be done according to my past owner who used it for about 4 years.

The 23 is a 1979 model (Scepter or Tsunami?) and has an heavy welded top over much of the cockpit which probably adds a couple of hundred pounds. Running a single 225 might be a sensible option (and carry an auxilary.) Having an extra motor you can switch out in a couple of hours if you need to go fishing is a plus. (the 225 motors are close on the existing setup and aren't couterrotating)
